There are hundreds of website designers in Sri Lanka, from freelancers working on the side to established agencies. Prices, quality and working styles vary enormously, and it is hard to tell them apart from a homepage alone.
A website is a long-term business asset, so choosing the right partner matters. These ten questions will help you compare website design companies in Sri Lanka and avoid the mistakes we see most often when businesses come to us to fix or rebuild a site.
1. Can I see websites you have built — and visit them live?
Screenshots can be polished; live websites cannot hide anything. Ask for links to recent projects similar to yours and open them on your phone. Check that they load quickly, look professional and make it easy to contact the business. Our own portfolio links to every live site we show.
Look for variety too. If every site in a portfolio looks the same, you are probably buying a template.
2. Will the design be custom or based on a template?
Templates are not bad in themselves, but you should know what you are paying for. A custom design is planned around your brand, your customers and the actions you want them to take. A template is a shortcut. Ask directly, and ask to see the design for approval before development starts.
3. Who will own the domain, hosting and website?
This is the most important question on the list. Your domain name should be registered in your name or your company's name, and you should have full admin access to the hosting, the content management system and the website files.
We regularly meet business owners who cannot change their own website, or even move it, because a previous developer controls the domain. Get ownership agreed in writing before you pay.
4. Will my website work properly on mobile phones?
Most visitors to Sri Lankan websites use a smartphone, and Google ranks the mobile version of your site first. Every website should be fully responsive — not just "shrunk to fit" — with readable text, easy-to-tap buttons and fast loading on mobile data. Ask how the agency tests on real devices.
5. What SEO is included?
A good website design company builds SEO into the site from day one. At a minimum, ask whether they will:
- Write unique page titles and meta descriptions
- Use a clear heading structure on every page
- Create clean, readable URLs
- Generate an XML sitemap and connect Google Search Console
- Optimise images and loading speed
- Add structured data (schema) so Google understands your business
Ongoing work to rank for competitive keywords is a separate SEO service, but the foundation should come with the website.
6. Which platform will you use, and can I update it myself?
Ask which platform the agency recommends and why. WordPress is popular because your team can edit pages easily; custom code can be faster and more flexible for special features. Neither is always right — our article on WordPress vs custom websites explains the trade-offs. Either way, ask for a short training session so you are not dependent on the developer for every small change.
7. What exactly is included in the price?
Website quotes in Sri Lanka can look very different because they include different things. Ask for a written scope that lists the pages, features, number of design revisions, content responsibilities, and whether domain, hosting and email are included. Our guide to website costs in Sri Lanka lists the items to compare.
8. How long will it take, and what do you need from me?
A small website typically takes one to two weeks; larger sites take three weeks or more. A professional agency will give you a timeline with milestones and tell you exactly what they need from you — usually your logo, text, images and feedback. If timelines are vague, expect delays.
9. How do you communicate during the project?
Ask who your main contact will be, how often you will get updates and how you will give feedback. You should be able to review the site on a private staging link before it goes live. Fast, clear communication is often the biggest difference between a smooth project and a frustrating one.
10. What happens after the website launches?
Websites need care: software updates, backups, security monitoring and occasional changes. Ask what support is included after launch, for how long, and what ongoing maintenance costs. A company that disappears after the final invoice is a risk to your business.
Red flags to watch for
- No live portfolio links, or only screenshots
- Refusing to register the domain in your name
- A price with no written scope
- Promises of "guaranteed number one on Google"
- No contract, no timeline and no named contact person
- Full payment requested before any design is shown
Freelancer or website design company?
A skilled freelancer can be a good choice for a very small, simple site. For a business website that needs design, development, SEO and reliable support, a company is usually safer — you are not relying on one person's availability, and you get a team with different skills. Whichever you choose, the ten questions above still apply.

Frequently asked questions
A freelancer can suit a very small, simple site. A company is safer when you need design, development, SEO and ongoing support, because you are not relying on one person being available.
You should. Make sure the domain is registered in your name or your company's name and that you receive full access to the hosting, CMS and files.
Yes. Most website projects are run online through calls, shared documents and staging links, so the agency's location matters less than its process and communication.
